Staff Reporter There are a lot of things at the high school that are unnoticed or seemingly insignificant. Cross Country is one of those things. But to all members of the team, it is anything but that. The sport brings many things to each of them. Sierra Marty, one of the team captains, said, “A lot goes on in training. And anyone can be a runner. No specific size or fitness level--it's awesome”. There are no tryouts for Cross Country. All you have to do is pay the fees and come to the practices. The season begins a week or two before school starts. However, the training for this sport begins long before then. According to the teammates, to truly succeed with running, it's an all year thing. The summer training for the fall season started the second week of summer. The athletes were there at 6:30 am every weekday. Now they have practice every day after school. The average week for cross country consists of “hard days” and “easy days”. Monday is speed day, which entails something like mile repeats. Tuesday is hill repeat day. Wednesday is a long run (around 8 miles). Thursday is premeet day, a short run, which is still 3-5 miles. And then a meet on Friday. The training doesn't just consist of workouts. There is dieting, getting adequate sleep, and maintaining mental toughness. Sierra was right when she said a lot happens in training. When asked what it was like being in a co-ed sport, many of them said it was one of the best things about the sport. Kevin Syphus, another team captain, said, “It brings different personalities and friends”. And Sierra said, “It’s really cool. It's just more friends and more people cheering you on”. It's obvious this team is like that of a family. Friendships like these are hard to find. Not only does it bring you best friends, but it puts you in incredible shape. Taylor Christianson said, “The whole atmosphere goes beyond being teammates. And it just becomes a lifestyle”. The way this team has continued to work together at a high level, is a credit to our new coach, Janel Warren. Her love for the sport and the team is apparent. If you're looking to better yourself and meet some incredible people, cross country is the place for you.
